Improving the Treatment Performance of Low Impact Development Practices—Comparison of Sand and Bioretention Soil Mixtures Using Column Experiments

Low impact development (LID) practices, such as bioretention and sand filter basins, are stormwater control measures designed to mitigate the adverse impacts of urbanization on stormwater. LID treatment performance is highly dependent media characteristics. The literature suggests that often leach nutrients in effluent. objective this study was analyze different soil mixtures. Specifically, investigation aimed answer whether use limestone recycled glass could improve systems. Column experiments were assess (1) removal efficiencies mixtures (2) plant uptake rates. Enhanced pollutant observed for custom blends with addition sand, indicating mean dissolved total phosphorus 44.5% 32.6% respectively, while conventional leached phosphorus. Moreover, improved copper achieved rates 70.7% 93.4%, respectively. results suggest nutrient effluent concentration decreased plants, 72.4%, nitrogen 22% blend.
